Today, the 19th of October 2008, marks day number 3947 since Fui Yin and I first dated. In a different format, we have been together for 10 years 9 months and 20 days. We will like to take this opportunity to recap our love story. We met each other for the first time in 1994, at that time we were only high school classmates. We were then classmates for another 2 different years, but we had never spoken to each other for more than 10 occasions all together, largely because we mixed with completely different groups of friend.
Until 1997, during our year end class trip, by luck, by chance, or by faith, I ended up sitting next to Fui Yin on our return bus trip. For the first time we looked into each other’s eyes, we smiled at each other, and we talked through the whole bus trip. I could feel something different. I felt I wanted more from this lady, somehow.
We started seeing each other few weeks after arriving home, with our first successful date on the 30th of December, which is a date that we then celebrate annually. Fui Yin was not easy to please, but somehow I managed to hit the right button most of the times, as opposed to my mates mentioned earlier. I handmade her artificial flowers, I made her hundreds of lucky stars using coloured paper strips and sat them in jars, I sang her love songs. We officially became couple, and it has since been a long and exciting journey. We certainly had our ups and downs, laughter and tears, joy and sorrow. There were even 2 years that we were physically separated when Fui Yin started her career in Malaysia while I was just commencing mine in Melbourne. But most importantly we are still holding on to each other strongly, with passion, with trust, with love.
Today is a milestone for both of us. While we have been together for 3947 days, it is day number 1 we become husband and wife. We know that we will only hold together stronger than ever. We know we have already found the love of our lives.
I will like to thank my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, for bringing me to this world, raising me up, and weathering me through different storms. Dad and mum, I love you. And I certainly like to thank Fui Yin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Yap, for bringing me this wonderful, lovely wife, you guys have done a fantastic job. Many thanks to my new sister in law Rachel and her husband Shaun who have provided so much of help along the way.
Fui Yin: I will like to thank my parents for bringing me to this world, looking after me, taking good care of me; I love you. I am sure Sang Yee will take over very well. And I thank Sang Yee’s parents for bringing me this great husband, you guys have raised him so well. I thank my sister Rachel and my brother-in-law Shaun for all the help all these times.
And before you all, we promise that we will love each other for the rest of our lives, we look forward to this new chapter of our lives. Once again, thanks to all of you, please enjoy the rest of the afternoon."
